23 Tips to Dress Skinny

Yes, you read correctly! I have 23 tips here to help you dress and photograph in a more slimming way. Not all of us were meant to be a size 00, the sooner we understand this and learn to love the bodies we have, the happier we will be. It is not about being skinny, but about dressing in a manner that is flattering to your body and calling out your most attractive features. No matter your age, size or shape these tips will help you dress skinny.

 #1: Define your waist.

This helps create the illusion of an hour-glass figure and shows off curves in all the right places. You can consider wearing shapewear beneath your clothes for added definition.

#2: Wear v-neck tops.

V-neck tops help to elongate your upper body by adding balance to your hips and thighs. 

 #3: Cover up with long outerwear

Long sweeping outerwear such as kimonos or cardigans will lengthen your frame.

 #4: Avoid rounded shoes.

Rounded shoes do nothing but make you legs look short and stumpy. Sorry, they have got to go. Pointed-toed shoes help elongate your legs giving the illusion that they are longer than they truly are.

#5: Wear clothes that are the correct size.

Wearing sizes that are too big or small does not make you look slimmer. Bulky clothes tend to make you look bigger while clothes that are too small tend to show off problem areas.

#6: Invest in shapewear.

If you want to dress skinny, shapewear should become your new best friend. This should become a daily staple to hide bulges and imperfections.

#7 Dress in one color.

When you dress in two colors, the eye is drawn to the area where the two colors meet, which is usually the waistline. Dressing in one color is a simple way to lengthen your body by creating one seamless look.

#8 Choose the right undergarments.

Undergarments are even more important than actual outfits.  A bra that is too tight will draw attention to back fat and tight panties will cause rolls, muffin tops and cellulite to show through your clothes.

 #9 Wear clothing with vertical stripes

Stripes tend to stand out so horizontal stripes will make you look wider. It is better to go with stripes that are smaller, vertical and in a darker color.

#10 Avoid pleated skirts and dresses.

When worn correctly pleats can be feminine and sweet but it doesn’t take much to cause them to shift the wrong way which will then add a bulkiness to your frame.

#11 Swap skinny jeans for boot cut jeans

If your waist and thighs are your problem area it is better to wear bootcut jeans to add height to your frame.

#12 Avoid light color jeans and pants.

These two types of bottoms have the potential to making your legs look thicker. Always choose darker colors as they have a slimming effect.

#13 Wear heels with skinny jeans.

If you like skinny jeans but just don’t think they are for you because of the width of your legs, don’t wear flats or flip flops. Make sure they are ankle length jeans and pair them with a sexy pair of pointed-toed heels.

#14 Choose your accessories wisely.

Always accessorize. Long necklaces take the focus away from the hips and big earrings draw the attention away from the upper body and to your face.

 #15 Stick your chin up and out.

This will take away the appearance of a double chin. (like the lady pictured in yellow.)

#16 Stand at a 45degree angle.

Never be photographed head-on. Turn slightly to the side with one foot forward and lean your body weight on your back foot. (again, like the lady in yellow)

#17 Put your hand on your hip

Putting your hand on your hip ensures that it won’t get smooshed against your body making it look chunky. (you got it, like the lady in yellow.)

If you are taking a selfie, angle your camera slightly above your face which will help elongate your neck and body. (NOT like the lady in yellow, lol!)

 #19 Cross your legs at the ankles and NOT the knees

Just like you don’t want to smoosh your arms, you don’t want to smoosh your legs either.  Sitting at the edge of your chair with your legs crossed at the ankle will make your legs look thinner and will avoid the appearance of cellulite.

#20 Dress in darker colors

You don’t necessarily have to dress in black but darker colors do make you look slimmer.

 #21 Stand or sit tall

Doing this simple trick will lengthen your frame.

#22 Use fake tanner and/or bronzer

If you aren’t living where you can be out in the sun and have a tan, or during the winter months, a good fake tanner is a must have. Having a darker complexion can help you look more tone and can also hide imperfections and cellulite.

#23 Put your tongue on the roof of your mouth while smiling

Placing your tongue so it touches the roof of your mouth while smiling, will tighten the area under your chin and give you a more defined look.
